The Elder Scrolls III Morrowind

When Morrowind was first released, it was heralded as being one of the biggest games ever made—and for its time, it certainly was.
Set on the island of its namesake, Morrowind, and populated by a host of very angry dark elves, the game puts players in the role of a "chosen one" type
character who's fated to save the world from an evil Daedric prince called Dagoth Ur.
You could go along with the prophecy, or you could just say "screw it" and explore the island of Morrowind at your leisure.
